Oddly enough, Mophie does make a bottomless juice pack case to allow access to this port. So unless you’re rocking a pair of Bluetooth headphones, you’d have to completely remove the case in order to use your wired one. It’s worth mentioning that headphones connected to the case via the Lightning adapter do not work. I believe it channels power through the case via the Lightning port, charging the phone first and then the case battery when the phone is at 100%. Through some wizardry, you can keep the case on your phone and still charge both the phone and case battery. Last, but far from least, the juice pack air is Qi enabled. There’s the little battery light indicator LEDs and button. The back of the case has a noticeable bump where the battery is located, but still has a low profile, only slightly thicker than most normal cases I’ve tried. The front of the case fits pretty flush with the screen, except for a small lip around the top and bottom, extending a few millimeters from the screen’s level. The protection value of the case itself seems decent. The front-facing speaker holes are an unexpected yet necessary bonus. I suppose it was the only place they could have added speaker holes, but having the sound aimed at your face rather than away from it actually helps the sound quality quite a bit. Mophie added a bit of extra functionality to this area with forward-facing speaker holes, which basically serve to redirect the sound from the speakers on the bottom of the phone. The “chin” of the case adds about 1/2” of height and is primarily needed as a pass-through for the case’s Lightning port to the phone’s Lightning port. It also provides a solid grip that the XR lacks without a case. It has a matte finish and feels good in the hand. The red model of juice pack that I was sent almost perfectly matches the shade of red that the iPhone XR sports. A side view of the juice pack air, showing the gradual increase in thickness for the battery pack. The case also makes it slightly taller and wider, and close to twice as thick compared to the naked iPhone. That’s not terribly heavy, but it’s certainly noticeable. For reference, the iPhone XR is 6.84 oz, so the addition of the case makes it roughly 40% heavier. But for someone who struggles with battery life and needs such a case to stay afloat through the day, we see no reason the bad would outweigh the good here. The juice pack air weighs in at a mere 2.7 oz. It doesn't offer much more size to the sides, but on the bottom and top it is definitely noticeable in the pocket. Given the iPhone 5 is already a long handset, the only problematic area for the Air is its length. But the thing about the Juice Pack Air is the fact it can charge the iPhone 5 from dead to a full charge, which in reality should get your iPhone through more than a day, if not two. It offers no difference from charging from the wall or from the case in terms of speed, of course you're just limited to space. In our testing we found battery life on the Air to be pretty good. There are four lights that will indicate how much charge is remaining when a button to the left is pushed. To begin charging the iPhone 5 - it's not automatic - the user must turn on the switch that's located in the same area. Keeping the user in the know about how much battery is left, a charging indicator is located on the back of the case. Given how massive microUSB has become outside of the Apple ecosystem, it does work well, and you can plug it into Apple's USB wall charger. Presumably, Apple's Lightning connector restrictions - that makes it difficult for third-party manufacturers to integrate the technology - kept Mophie away from using it to provide the charging here. The case charges using a microUSB cord and the iPhone 5 can be left in while it's charging, which also charges the handset at the same time. The iPhone 5's buttons are accessible, though you may want to use the adapter provided by Mophie if you want to connect your headphones. While the focus of the Mophie is obviously its charging capabilities, it does go one step further in offering a hard protective shell that keeps the device safe. The iPhone 5 slips tightly into the case, where you're not left with any fear that it may fall out. The company boasts 100 per cent more battery life when the Air's charging capabilities are flipped on behind the back of the case. Here, Mophie has packed its highest capacity battery ever into its thinnest, smoothest soft-touch design.
